Things may not be how they were before, however, PHE lessons did not change one bit, thanks to our very creative teachers. With the help of technology like the distance calculating app, events such as shot put and shuttle run were conducted virtually. Rather than going on a 2k run for an endurance test as we always do, students were encouraged to use basic equipment like a jump rope to improve that particular skill.
Moreover, exciting activities to break the sedimentary style of online school were conducted. Fitness routines like zumba and aerobics were introduced to the students. Not only were they conducted during PHE lessons, these fun events were hosted during the assemblies, which energized all the students first thing in the morning.
Sports during recess is something everyone looks forward to. For the students who are back on campus, recess time has been modified to follow COVID protocols as well. Along with wearing masks, the basketball court and the football field, along with all the equipment involved such as basketballs/footballs, hoops/goal posts, etc are constantly sanitised after use. Moreover, at any given time, there are at least 2 teachers supervising to make sure that the students are following the social distancing regulations.
Even after all of these successful attempts of employing sports during a pandemic, it feels empty without our annual sports day. From the trials to the house cheers to the relays, sports day is an integral part of Sreenidhi. Although it is not possible for all of us to be present at the cricket ground to celebrate our athletes, our student council has planned an energy-packed olympic week. With events ranging from push ups to 100m dash, it has everything sports day has and more.
To adhere to the social distancing protocol, students who are learning virtually have the option of submitting the videos of them performing the chosen event through a google form, and the students who are attending in school will be allowed to participate while practicing social distancing.
If you are a fitness freak or you just love goofing around with your friends, you can play tag! It is a simple game that improves your endurance, agility, and allows you to get closer to your friends without actually getting close to them. Maybe add in a little nostalgia by playing hide and seek, which is another fun game that is perfect for social distancing and does not require any equipment to play.
The existence of COVID-19 is something mankind will have to learn to deal with, which requires the adaptation of sports. Because of all the discomfort people feel due to being trapped in their home, exercising has become all the more necessary. These are difficult times we are going through, and athletic programs can help us manage the stress and discomfort we experience daily. Sports is an essential part of everyday life in all aspects, and it is in fact true that people are eager to experience and participate in live sports again. We should all follow COVID-19 protocols while getting some much needed exercise by participating in the upcoming Olympic Week!
